In a Heart Beat
by Maurine Roy - 1st Place |

| I designed
the heart block for a friend of mine who had a
heart attack. I liked it so well I decided
to make a wall hanging using the wonderful batiks
that are available. There are 58 different
batiks in this quilt. |

The background
was a design change for me. I wanted to
concentrate on the appliqué as it moved into the
foreground, and I wanted the quilt to tell a story
as well. The hawk is the main focal point
but there is another "watcher". This quilt
was inspired by Steven Lyman, an artist who did
wonderful paintings of wildlife. He was
killed in an accident in Yosemite Park several
years ago. |

Amish Detour

I really liked
the look of this basket pattern, and really wanted
to follow it 100% . . . but all that hand
appliqué, oh no! So I changed some baskets
and did everything by machine, including the
raw-edge appliqué and thread painting, and added
the chicken and rooster. Much more fun for
me than hand work! I enjoyed the piecing the
back with funky fabrics, too. I began this
quit in a class in New Milford, CT taught by Pat
Murphy, once an army sergeant stationed at Fort
Lewis and now mayor of New Milford. |
