A Visit to the North
Pole by Dianna Park - 1st Place |
 |
| I started this at Christmas time in 1999. I
was a brand new quilter who wanted to learn how
to applique. I was also going to spend 5 months
in a 2 bedroom apartment with 4 kids while we
built a new house and I needed a small project
to work on as most of our stuff was packed. This
was my project, and I did learn a lot about
applique. I did the applique, put the quilt
together, and hand quilted most of it in about 6
months. The emblishments have taken 8 years, I
found I don't like to do bead work! |

Penguin Fascination
by Mary Anne Spade - 2nd
Place |
 |
| I became fascinated with penguins after
watching the movie "March of the Penguins". I
reduced the original pattern by half since I
wanted a wall hanging of penguins, not a wall of
penguins. |

Funky Pumpkin Patch
by Roberta McAbee - 3rd Place |
 |
| I used the fabric as inspiration for piecing
and quilting this quilt. I made a copy of the
fabric and enlarged it for the crows in the
corners, and put a lighter shadow behind them so
they would not fade into the background. The
scarecrow is a little more frustrated than in
the fabric (kind of like in my garden). The
binding pumpkins were fussy cut from the fabric,
stuffed with Hobbs 80/20 and then I added
crystals for eyes and teeth. I hand sewed them
onto the quilt with beads. I wanted something
different in the log cabin blocks so the
pumpkins were quilted free form and heavily
embelished as funky pumpkins. |

Snowmen for Cordelia
by Carol Hill - HM |
 |
| I made this quilt for my great-niece
Cordelia Aoife Ferry, who was born just before
Christmas. There are 75 different blues, reds,
and greens in the logs, all from my stash. The
key to the design is that the light fabric in
the log cabin matches and merges with the
background of the fussy-cut squares. I saw this
layout in a quilt at the Puyallup Fair last year
but didn't make a note of the quilter's name. |
