      Workshop: Free Improv Piecing

This workshop is a relaxed and free-flowing day of freestyle patchwork piecing. This wonderful improvisational technique lets your fabrics tell you exactly where they want to go, taking all the pressure off fabric selection. You'll learn to trust your instincts and work more intuitively, creating beautiful combinations without second-guessing yourself.  The secret to achieving beautiful, harmonious results lies in choosing a colour palette with a highlight accent. It's the perfect opportunity to give new life to those fabric scraps from other projects or finally use those gorgeous pieces you've been treasuring for just the right moment.

      What You'll Learn:

      • Improvisational piecing techniques
      • How to work with fabric scraps and create cohesive designs
      • Grid and circular abstract patchwork methods
      • Basic quilting techniques for finishing your piece
      • Professional binding methods for a polished edge
      • Design decision-making and trusting your creative instincts
      • Options for turning your piece into functional items (cushions, bags, wall art)

      Workshop: Disintegration

Combine the precision of paper piecing with improvisation to create a disintegrating effect! We will be using the Radial Geese pattern in this class, which will give you the tools to apply a disintegrating effect to other paper piecing patterns in the future. We’ll also discuss other ways of incorporating the idea of disintegration or deconstruction into your quilts. Some paper piecing experience is recommended for this class.

        Workshop: FPP Design - Computer

In this workshop, Cole will work students through a step by step process of drawing a digital quilt block and the steps involved in designing an entire foundation paper piecing quilt pattern.  The class is long enough that members will have time to try the techniques and get feedback and help working on their own laptop.

Basic foundation piecing knowledge is necessary for this class as well as basic computer skills.

A laptop (Mac or PC) is or tablet required.  An iPad will not work.

To prepare for the class:  download the most recent version of Inkscape, a free and widely used application.  Here's the link:  Inkscape
Please make sure you download the most recent version of this software.

Supply list:  laptop with Inkscape already downloaded.  We will not be sewing in class.

Workshop: Material Matrix--this is a 2 day workshop on both Thursday Oct 15th and Oct 16th

My technique, "Material Matrix", is inspired by the painter, Chuck Close. It involves using a gridded photograph and interpreting each 2-inch square into fabric, using piecing to achieve the effect.  My lecture, "Material Matrix and the Paths Taken", is an overview of the evolution of Material Matrix and how it works.  In the workshop, in addition to the technique, I teach: what makes a good photo to use, color and value, curved-piecing, and how to grid your own photo. Everyone in the class will work on "Wake Up Cup"

There is a $3.00 fee payable at class for a template.
